Since May 25, 2018, the GDPR has come into force after a two-year transitional period. Almost all WordPress themes (templates) or websites with other content management systems use Google Fonts when displaying their content.
While those fonts look really nice and enhance the overall look and feel for the website users Google receives the IP-address for each and every visitor of your page, which should not be neccessary.
To be compliant with the GDPR, Google Fonts should be integrated in such a way, that the font is served locally. This is also recommended by various lawyers and hosters, who have dealt intensively with this topic. For this reason, we have developed a plugin, which will do this automatically for you. It’s that easy! We promise!
Lean back and let the plugin do all the work. That’s our AutoMode: Each time a page is viewed, this mode automatically checks if Google Fonts have been embedded within the page. If such a font is found, it will be downloaded into a cache folder – unless it is already locally stored – while replacing the original Google Font Request with the newly created local version. It all happens completely automatically and without you having to do anything about it.
All Google Fonts used on your website will be downloaded to a local folder, the Google Font Cache. For each font a separate folder is created in which the fonts are stored in all available variations. Subsequently, a stylesheet is generated, which provides the now locally available fonts as usual.
While using many different Google Fonts, the included stylesheets can be quite large. So we added the option to compress the generated styles. Thereby unnecessary characters, like eg. Spaces will be removed from the files and thus reducing the overall file size. This has a positive effect on the load time of your WordPress page and should always be activated.
Sometimes, due to the laziness of the developers, Google Fonts are also included in a CSS file via a so-called @import rule. With our CSS Import Rule Check Feature such aformentioned rules are recognized and replaced accordingly. We generate a new CSS file where the call to Google Font is been removed and changed to the corresponding locally available font. Afterwards the old import rule will be replaced by the new CSS file. This ensures that the original state of the file is never changed and can always be reverted.
